I woke up to stare into the face of Ash and Arianna. Arianna the traitor, the deceptionist, the Phoenix.
"Get away from me, Phoenix!" I roared, getting up to unexpose my stomach to the murderous beast.
"Z, relax. She's on our side now," Ash said soothingly.
"Actually, I am zurprised zat 'oo 'ave survived ze phoenix's zong," Arianna said, her amazing emerald-green eyes wide.
"You mean YOUR song," I spat.
"No, 'oo have it all wrong. I was in Celadon City, when ze Phoenix came. After 'earing zat zome Pokemon Trainers ave all ze legends, it got a little zcared. It didn't vant to fight unnecessarily against a power equal or greater zan it's own. It had to adopt an 'uman form. It chose me, and zat changed both of us. Phoenix found compassion, love, and emotions other than hate. My body vas changed as to be zlightly phoenix-like.
"For ze most part, ze Phoenix controlled me. When it had a particularly ztrong surge of anger, 'atred, or fear, it could not keep my form. 'Oo have seen a good example of zis vhen your birds attacked me. It is veak enough for me to split vith it. Are 'oo ready for ze battle of 'oor lives?" She smiled gently.
"Yes," I replied, as I joined hand to paw with Mew and Mewtwo.
"What are you doing, Z?" Ash queried.
"Helping to make the best darn psybeam the world has ever seen!" I answered, focusing my mind.
I could see Mew and Mewtwo powering up, and stranger, I could feel them doing it.
Finally, after 3 minutes of intense concentration, we had powered up enough. I felt Mewtwo probing at Arianna, helping her to release the rather complex bonds Phoenix had used. Mewtwo left the tiniest bit left, so he wasn't crushed instantly by Phoenix's power. I felt Arianna finally release the last bond, and with an explosion of green light, a red and gold bird with a rainbow crest flew out to the sky. The Phoenix was back. And unhindered by Arianna's emotions, it would be stronger than ever. Arianna fell to the ground, exhausted from the mental effort needed to break even the tiniest bonds.
I sent encouragement to the half-dead girl, along with some energy, just enough to make her sit up and open her eyes. I mounted Artie. We took off, and then the battle began.
